THIS is what we've been waiting for. And big thanks to Chris Dadge for lending us his copy... of what is probably his first appearance on CD. Yup, that's Dadge playing with the Crescent Heights Concert Band, alongside future Lab Coast bandmate David Laing. From the liner notes: It seems like only yesterday that we were organizing the band room in anticipation of a new season. Now we are completing the school year with many fond memories reflecting the successes of our ensembles. This compilation features works performed by the Crescent Heights Concert and District Bands, Crescent's Jazz Ensemble, some of our Student Chamber Ensembles, and the Westwinds Music Society Red Concert Band. The core of our Instrumental Music program is the Concert Band. The Crescent Heights Concert Band participated in the Alberta International Festival of Bands. They received a GOLD award for their superior performance. The Concert Band begins with one of the selections performed at the festival: The Royal Air Force March Past, composed by H.W. Davis/G. Dyson, adapted by H.R. Gore. A Disney Spectacular arranged by J. Moss was part of last year's Southern California concert program. The tour was a tremendous Success with the band receiving many accolades for their musical performances. This is followed by a J. Swearingen's arrangement of D. Kabalevsky's Comedian's Galop. Instrumentalists from Dr. Egbert, Langevin, Colonel Irvine, Bob Edwards and Balmoral Junior High join with members of the Concert Band to form the Crescent Heights District Band. These musicians participated in the Alberta International Festival of Bands and were also recipients of a GOLD award. Two selections are featured: Valley Forge March, K.L. King, arranged by J. Swearingen and Regenesis, Song of the Planet, by J. Higgins. Regenesis is a descriptive overture commemorating the 10th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens. A heartfelt thanks to all who participated in making District Band a Success. Student Chamber Ensembles are a vital component of our Instrumental Music program. Our trumpet section performs a French chanson Bon Jour Mon Coeur, composed by Lassus, and arranged by their instructor Samantha Whalen. Karla and Carmen are featured next in a Haydn duet edited by Voxman entitled Menutto. The Low Brass Ensemble performs an original composition written by their instructor Derek Stohl entitled Bear Hunt. Westwinds Music Society is a nonprofit adult community music group. This growing organization now consists of 6 concert bands, 6 jazz bands and 4 choirs. Many of our students continue to play with one of the Westwinds ensembles after graduating. Another GOLD award recipient the Westwinds Red Concert Band performs J. Williams' Midway March and J. Zdechliko's Chorale and Shaker Dance II. Chantal and Rachel Flatt perform Das Klinget so Herrlich arranged by E. Kocacic from Mozart's The Magic Flute. Our senior Saxophone Ensemble, Sian, Kristin, Stacy, Tyler, and Candice perform an A. Frackenpohl arrangement of Mancini's The Pink Panther. The Jazz Ensemble includes some of the finest musicians in our program. St. Thomas, by S. Rollins, arranged by M. Taylor features Kayleigh, trombone, Amanda, trumpet, Neil, Lawton, trombone, Dan Johnson, trumpet, Chris, drum set, and Tyler, congas. Thelonious Monk's Straight No Chaser, arranged by M. Michael Sweeney's arrangement of Andrew Lloyd Weber's Jospeh and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the Concert Band's next selection. At our Remembrance Day Service the band performed D. Bukvich's Symphony #1 - In Memoriam Dresden - 1945. This piece recounts the tragic fire bombing of the German city of Dresden. The finale from Rossini's William Tell Overture arranged by R. Longfield concludes our time with you. We hope that you have enjoyed listening to us.
