We found this record in the local history archive at the central library - so into the collection of school records it goes! We appreciate the history of music programming in the Calgary school system on the back cover of this one. From the back cover: A NIGHT OF MUSIC BY CALGARY PUBLIC SCHOOL GROUPS Recorded Live at the Jubilee Auditorium March 11, 1970 A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CALGARY PUBLIC SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM The first school music demonstration was organized in 1927 by Captain Hinton, supervisor of music until 1950. These annual voluntary citywide music demonstration programs have been held annually since that date, and this year marks the 43rd anniversary of this important event." These concerts featuring both choral and instrumental groups from grades one to twelve are non-competitive, designed to demonstrate to the public the type and scope of the regular classroom music program. In 1952 the Calgary Public School Board began to provide band and orchestral instruments in order to facilitate a continuous, developmental instrumental program in the secondary schools. This music program has expanded steadily; new band programs have been organized each year over the past six years, with the result that twelve high schools now offer a band or orchestra program for credit. In addition, thirty-one of the forty junior high schools also offer a band or orchestra program. Calgary has been fortunate in attracting many highly-qualified secondary school instrumental teachers. The enthusiastic cooperation of principals and the financial assistance of the School Board have contributed greatly to the success and expansion of the instrumental program. All children in grades one to three receive instruction in the use of rhythm band instruments, and many classes in grades four to six have an opportunity to study the recorder as a pre-band instrument. Many students with elementary school recorder experience elect band when they move up into junior high. Calgary schools have always offered a continuous sequential choral program. grades one to six and optional in grades seven to twelve. At the present time, choral or instrumental music for credit when they enter junior high schools.
