We can't remember what specifically led to Hot Little Rocket being invited to tour China in 2005 - but led to this CD, which includes five tracks which would show up two years later on their Steve Albini-produced How To Lose Everything album. That’s right, HLR seem to have this inherent need to do everything that Paul McCartney and Billy Joel do. But that’s not all — they’re travelling to Chicago in January to record their new material with legendary sound engineer Steve Albini (The Pixies, Nirvana, Low). Sound impressive? “It’s not like he makes you take a hipness test with things like, ‘Where were you in 1989 and what were you listening to?’” says HLR’s lead vocalist Andrew Wedderburn. “It’s a real studio… where people record music for a living.” Besides Albini having a reputation for being able to capture a consistently unique, natural “room-y” sound, he also carries with him a reputation in indie-rock circles of elite coolness. Methinks they’re bound to sell a few more copies than they normally would, just by being associated with the man. Their warm-up-for-China show is at Broken City on September 29.
