Taking its title from the excellent James Keelaghan song on the disc, this is the first in a series of three compilations that was put out by Calgary's Activist Network in the early 2000's. There are a bunch of our favourites on here, including Lorrie Matheson's National Dust and Tariq - overall, this an excellent set of tracks that are imbued with social meaning without hitting you over the head. From the liner notes: History of the Activist Network During the late summer of 1999, a couple of activists were reflecting on the poor attendance at most local protests. They decided that an e- mail list and a website should be set up to publicize activist events. So, the computer geek of the two did just that. Around the same time, a group of people (under the supportive eyes of the Arusha Centre) undertook a project to revive the "Network" event and organization listings which had stopped publishing in 1993. The monthly calendar (printed/photocopied in 8.5/11" format) was produced by the Arusha Centre for 12 years and had been considered a valuable service to the Calgary community. Upon finding out about each other's similar projects, the two merged efforts at the end of 1999, resulting in the Calgary Activist Network. During the lead-up to the World Petroleum Congress in June of 2000, activists from across Alberta were meeting to prepare a counter- conference and protests. Out of these meetings came requests to expand the Calgary Activist Network to support other cities in the province, as well as an overall provincial site. The Alberta and Edmonton networks were finally launched in early 2001.
