We were trying to think of something new to say about local blues legend Back Alley John, but we couldn't - so we dug out the James Muretich review of this Tim Williams-produced tape (and found a couple of other local-ish reviews, for an added bonus): Back Alley John: Out On The Highway Calgary's Back Alley John has known his fair share of life on the road, playing an endless stream of small clubs and restaurants that help pay for rent, food and cigarettes. But it's just these dues that breathe life into John's new cassette, that takes the blues from Out On The Highway and brings it on home. This is blues that delves into the past and makes its passions present in a fashion similar to John Hammond, only Back Alley's pen is more active having written nine of the 12 tracks featured here. And they're good. Real good. With top-notch production and John's soulful guitar and harmonica work, this is easily one of the best blues offerings to come out of Canada in a while. (J.M.) Rating: B+
