There isn't a year on this tape from local country singer Brett Barrow, but we're guessing it was from somewhere around 1992, when this article was published in the Herald: Many fans are tuning into Calgary's new rising country star By Shi-lin Chan (Herald writer) Calgary's own Brett Barrow is the young new singer to watch on the horizon of country western music. He's only been singing professionally for two years, but already rave reviews have catapulted him to the fore and fans say if he doesn't make it big, who can. "He's one of the most talented guys around here," says one fan after Barrow's performance at the Stampede's Grandstand show. And young and old fans surround him for autographs. Nominated as most promising artist at the 1991 Alberta Country Music Awards, the 22- year-old northwest resident says, "It's a little overwhelming right now." Barrow's parents wait for him inside the Grandstand each night and their smiles and enthusiasm for Barrow can hardly be contained. "It's been a thrill for the whole family," says dad Tom Barrow. "We believe in him and support him 100 per cent." "He's moving so quickly, it's mind-boggling," adds mom, Winnie. Indeed, how quickly he moved. From mom's karaoke machine at home, where Barrow's parents one day discovered their son could sing well, to amateur competitions. And from winning the Stampede youth talent show, to opening for bands at the Silver Dollar, to placing fifth at the Youth Talent competition with finalists from all over North America in Memphis, Tenn. And Barrow says being nominated most promising singer without a release at the time was "pretty unexpected." "I've never performed at all growing up. It took everybody by surprise," he says. Barrow had one single out to radio stations last year and it's called I Just Want To Be The First One. And he's working on his next single with Nashville North, called Nights Like This, to be released in September. Barrow says he'd like to bill his five-member Brett Barrow Band as "traditional country with an edge." Barrow traded in his two- years of pre-Commerce at the University of Calgary for music when his interest began to stray. And his goal now: "To nail down a recording contract and spend my life making country music."
