Ah, the tribute album - what a wonderful, foolish endeavour. This one of for the late garage rocker Memphis Jay Reatard - who, we should note, has no connection to Calgary. But half the bands on here are Calgary-based and we're calling Sonic Church Records, the folks that put this out, Calgary-based (even though we know they're really holed up on a cult-like compound somewhere north of Drumheller). The tracks on here don't stray too far from the source material - which is, of course, more than welcome. For those who are curious about the Calgary connections, we've got locals Brain Bent and Salt Horse, as well as two Sonic Church-related bands (Bat Leather and Chainshot), a Tom Bagley project (Craven Cowards), and a Sanctums spin-off (X of Swords). Plus, we should note that two members of the very, very excellent Night Court are former Calgarians.
