We've had the pleasure of chatting with Neil MacGonigill a couple of times in the past months, and he slid us a copy of this tape - so, we'll add it to the archive but direct you to your favourite streaming platform to hear it. The Herald printed this unflattering review when Jann Arden's first album came out: Jann Arden: Time For Mercy (A&M). MOOD ALERT! Listening to Jann Arden for hours at a time could bring on clinical depression. On this debut album, produced in L.A., the Calgary singer's tuneful, prettily-sung pop tunes welcome you in hospitably, sit you down and then proceed to pour out their troubles. Eventually you catch yourself sneaking a peek at your watch. The titles - I Just Don't Love You Anymore, I'm Not Your Lover, I Would Die For You - are not exactly a bolt of JOLT. For those quiet, lonely hours (or possibly years), though, Arden is just the ticket with her clear vocals and the warbling harmonica, robust guitar, understated piano and subtle drums in the background. After all, melancholia does have an allure - otherwise, how would anyone explain The Cowboy Junkies? (K.Z.) Rating: B
